We had such great weeks of fun learning! We finished up a lot of things as the third 9 weeks came to a close today, March 15th. We celebrated Nicholas and Molly as our Star Students! Next week, we will be celebrating Xander!
Important Dates to Remember! Spring Pictures will be taken on Tuesday, March 19 3/22: Report Cards go home 4/1-4/5: SPRING BREAK!!! Upcoming Quizzes/Tests: 3/21: Spelling Test 3/22: 5 A Day Spiral Review Quiz 3/28: Spelling Test What did we do this week? What is coming next week? PHONICS/SPELLING: This week, our spelling focus was -ed and -ing endings. Next week, we will be focusing on -er/-or endings. Reading/ELA: We have finished up reading different versions of fairy tales and comparing and contrasting them. Ask your child which fairy tale was his/her favorite!! Then, we focused on reading passages about dental health and how to keep our teeth healthy. WRITING: We finished up our opinion writing unit! This next 9 weeks we will be revisiting narrative, informational, and opinion writing to complete one writing of each genre. SCIENCE/STEM: We finally tested our sundial designs. Check ClassDojo for pictures! MATH: In math, we finished time and moved on to counting money! We introduced the quarter and dollars. We practiced sorting, counting, solving word problems, and then creating our own word problems! I heard lots of, "This is FUN!!" as they were counting money. Keep practicing at home! Important Dates to Remember! 3/8: BINGO night at Ford! 3/20: 8:30 to 11:30-Kindergarten and NEW TO FORD 1st Grade Student Registration. It is not necessary to bring your kindergartener to this event. Upcoming Quizzes/Tests: 3/7: Spelling Test 3/8: 5 A Day Spiral Review Quiz What did we do this week? What is coming next week? PHONICS/SPELLING: This week, our spelling focus were regular plural nouns and next week will be irregular plural nouns. Reading/ELA: We have been reading different versions of fairy tales and the kids have LOVED this! We have been comparing and contrasting the two different versions. Ms. Reagan and I split the kids up into groups to listen to different stories and they enjoyed it. WRITING: We are continuing to discuss Opinion Writing. SCIENCE/STEM: We have been learning about the sun, stars, and the moon. We have been charting the moon on a calendar each day to show that it changes every night. We made sundials on Friday to tell time without a clock. We have to wait until it is sunny to test our designs. Check ClassDojo for pictures! MATH: In math, we worked on telling time on a clock. Important Dates to Remember! 2/14: Valentine's Day 2/18-2/22: Winter Break Upcoming Quizzes/Tests: 2/11: Subtraction Quiz 2/11: Closely related verbs Quiz 2/14: Spelling Test 2/15: 5 A Day Spiral Review Quiz What did we do this week? What is coming next week? PHONICS/SPELLING: This week, we learned about compound words and thought of LOTS of words that are made of 2 little words. Next week, we will be focusing on contractions and the 2 words that make up the contractions. Reading/ELA: We have been working on folktales and fables. We discussed how fables usually have talking animals and a lesson or moral to be learned. The kids loved the fables and guessing the moral! WRITING: Ms. Reagan taught the class more about opinions and reasons to support that opinion. The kids wrote another opinion piece on if we should get a class fish or hamster. We will focus on having strong beginnings and adding transition words in our writing. SOCIAL STUDIES: We finished learning about Juliette Gordon Low and all of her work to begin the Girl Scouts. We will be moving into our Science unit about the sun, stars, and the moon. MATH: In math, we worked on adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers up to 1000. We are using various strategies; i.e. base-ten blocks, partial sums, expanded addition, part-part whole, and expanded subtraction. Some problems that we have been learning are: 567 + 289 and 617 - 348. It can be challenging for some, but I have to say, my kids are ROCKING out their math strategies and doing a great job. What is coming next week? PHONICS/SPELLING: This week, we learned about the soft g and c when they come after e, i, or y. The skill for next week is -el, -al, -le. Reading/ELA: We have been reading information texts and discussing the key ideas, details, and author's point of view from the text. Next week, we will begin folktales and fables! WRITING: We have started our opinion writing unit. We had great opinions today on whether the kids thought a cat or a dog would make a better pet. We will be working on having strong reasons to support their opinions next week. SOCIAL STUDIES: We finished learning about Jackie Robinson this week and how he helped the integration of major league sports. The kids did great learning about our Georgia heroes who worked so hard to end segregation. Ms. Reagan taught some great lessons integrating technology and research with the class. MATH: In math, we have started adding 3 digit numbers up to 1000. We are using various strategies; i.e. base-ten blocks, partial sums, expanded addition, and part-part whole.
